Un feroce criminale vuole eliminare tutte le persone che possono ostacolare i suoi ambiziosi piani per la conquista dell'enorme patrimonio del marchese Gleneyre. Un nipote di questi, Adriano Messenger, comincia a sospettare, ed incarica un suo amico, Anthony Gethryn, ufficiale in pensione dell'Intelligence Service, di controllare una lista di nomi per appurare se le singole persone sono vive ed in buona salute. Mentre Anthony scopre che tutti sono morti di una morte apparentemente accidentale, anche Adriano perisce in un incidente aereo.
