Un terrorista di nome Simon (Irons) minaccia di far esplodere bombe in tutta New York, a meno che il poliziotto McClane (cui si affianca ben presto l'ex taxista Zeus) non segua le sue istruzioni. In realtà Simon realizza un clamoroso furto a Wall Street e solo i due indistruttibili eroi riescono a scoprirlo e a sconfiggerlo, dopo oltre due ore di corsa ininterrotta.
