Il giovane Steve Rogers farebbe di tutto per arruolarsi: scioccato da ciò che i nazisti stanno facendo in Europa, non sopporta di starsene con le mani in mano. La sua costituzione fragile, l'asma, l'altezza tutt'altro che idonea, però, fanno sì che venga rispedito al mittente ad ogni tentativo. Finché un giorno, un uomo di stato, il dottor Abraham Erskine, s'interessa a lui e gli propone di sottoporsi alla sperimentazione di un siero che ne farà il primo super soldato dell'esercito a stelle e strisce. Rogers, dunque, subisce una straordinaria trasformazione, ma sarà solo dopo un passaggio per le fila dello show-business (e cioè solo dopo aver indossato una calzamaglia) a divenire davvero Captain America.
