Joe Gower, un bibliotecario, accetta di sostituire l'amico poliziotto Abe Washington all'audizione per l'annuale ballo della polizia. Qui, però Joe si innamora (ricambiato) della poliziotta Rachel Wareham, con la quale finisce per fare coppia fissa. Inizia così una carrellata di menzogne ed equivoci, che avrà il suo epilogo quando, sequestrato da due banditi in una banca, Joe diventerà suo malgrado un eroe.
