Bridget è una ragazza perennemente in lotta con la bilancia, il suo lavoro, la mancanza di un uomo, gli anni che passano e le molte - a suo dire - sue imperfezioni. Come buon proposito per l'anno nuovo, decide di prendere in mano la sua vita tenendo un diario nel quale scrivere sempre tutta la verità. I fuochi d'artificio iniziano quando il suo affascinante, ma inaffidabile, capo comincia ad interessarsi alla 'bizzarra' miss Jones. Si getteranno nella mischia anche una banda di eccentrici amici e, soprattutto, una nuova conoscenza, che sembra poco simpatica ma in seguito riserverà delle sorprese.
