A casa di Holmes si presenta una sera una donna disperata per la scomparsa di suo marito, un ingegnere belga. Insieme al fido Watson, il celebre investigatore parte per la Scozia e va a finire in una locanda sulle rive del lago di Loch Ness. È a quel punto che Watson crede di vedere un mostro, che in realtà è un sottomarino. Così come la donna affranta che li ha "ingaggiati" si rivela poi una spia tedesca.
