Nell'Inghilterra orfana di Riccardo Cuor di Leone, il conte sassone Robert Hode (Bergin) entra in urto col normanno Sir Miles Folcanet (Prochnow). Quel che è peggio è che Sir Miles è promesso sposo della giovane Marian (Thurman) e anche Robert non è insensibile al fascino della ragazza. Gettato in prigione, Robert riesce a evadere e a rifugirasi nella foresta di Sherwood dove, assunto il nome di Robin Hood, mette assieme un piccolo esercito.
