A New York un assassino colpisce omosessuali sulla trentina con i capelli neri e alti circa un metro e settanta. Corrispondendo a queste caratteristiche somatiche, l'agente Steve Burns viene incaricato di infiltrarsi negli ambienti gay per scoprire l'assassino. Inizia così una vera discesa agli inferi del sadomasochismo, alla fine della quale scoprirà l'assassino ma anche, drammaticamente, la propria ambigua natura.
