Scappata dagli orrori della Germania nazista, la filosofa ebreo-tedesca Hannah Arendt nel 1940 trova rifugio insieme al marito e alla madre negli Stati Uniti, grazie all'aiuto del giornalista americano Varian Fry. Qui, dopo aver lavorato come tutor universitario ed essere divenuta attivista della comunità ebraica di New York, comincia a collaborare con alcune testate giornalistiche. Come inviata del New Yorker in Israele, Hannah si ritrova così a seguire da vicino il processo contro il funzionario nazista Adolf Eichmann, da cui prende spunto per scrivere La banalità del male, un libro che andrà incontro a molte controversie.
