Dan Mulligan, produttore musicale in caduta libera, con una figlia adolescente, un matrimonio fallito alle spalle e il vizio della bottiglia, incontra Gretta, una cantautrice inglese in panne sulla banchina della metropolitana. Arrivata a New York col fidanzato quasi celebre e la promessa di una vita da spendere insieme, Gretta perde in un baleno ragazzo e sogni. Autrice di ballate sentimentali, una sera si esibisce suo malgrado in un locale dell'East Village frequentato da Dan. Ubriaco di sventura ma avvinto dalla sua musica, Dan le propone di lavorare insieme per riprendersi il loro posto nel mondo.
