Joe Norson, giovane marito con difficoltà finanziarie e un figlio in arrivo, ruba un portadocumenti a un gangster credendo che contenga solo poche centinaia di dollari. Quando scopre di essersi impossessato di un bottino di trentamila dollari proveniente da un'estorsione, Joe cerca di rimediare promettendo al malavitoso la restituzione del denaro. Il gangster, deciso a non lasciar venire allo scoperto i suoi crimini (dei quali è complice anche un noto avvocato), cercherà di eliminare Joe e tutte le persone da lui coinvolte nella faccenda.
