Jason Carmichael (Dudley Moore) è un affermato sceneggiatore in piena crisi creativa: Phoebe Craddock, (Mary Steenburgen) un'insegnante di una piccola scuola di provincia, con ambizioni da scrittrice, sarà la sua nuova compagna di lavoro grazie ad un imbarazzante equivoco.
