In una notte d'inverno viene trovato il corpo esanime di una fanciulla sconosciuta: l'unico dato di fatto, che possa servire alla polizia come punto di partenza per iniziare un'indagine, diretta prima di tutto a stabilire l'identità della morta, è l'iniziale "S", ricamata sul fazzoletto trovatole addosso. Considerato il suo modo di vestire, Scotland Yard suppone che la ragazza abbia frequentato ambienti artistici: si scopre infatti poco dopo che era iscritta all'accademia di musica. Il suo nome è Zaffiro Robins: la polizia sospetta che sia stata uccisa da David, suo innamorato. Indagini vengono compiute tra la gente di colore che vive a Londra: si può infatti accertare che in questo ambiente si sono scatenate le passioni che hanno portato al feroce delitto. Dopo varie ricerche, Scotland Yard riesce finalmente a raccogliere le prove necessarie per incriminare l'assassino: si tratta di persona molto vicina all'uccisa, e sulla quale meno che su ogni altra potevano appuntarsi i sospetti.
