Il film, il primo con Daniel Radcliffe dopo la conclusione della saga di Harry Potter, è tratto dal romanzo gotico di Susan Hill "La Donna in Nero", il film racconta le vicende di Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe), un giovane avvocato londinese, che si reca in uno sperduto villaggio per occuparsi dell’eredità di una cliente defunta. Qui si imbatte in una serie di eventi sinistri e inquietanti: il fantasma di una donna aleggia sull’intero villaggio ed è in cerca di vendetta.
