É l'anno 1914. Il giovane ingegnere minerario Richard Hannay, tornato in Inghilterra dal Sudafrica, si trova involontariamente coinvolto, per aver ospitato in casa propria un colonnello dell'Intelligence Service braccato da spie prussiane, in un intrigo destinato a far scoppiare, con l'uccisione del Primo ministero greco Karolides in visita a Londra, la guerra tra Prussia e Gran Bretagna. Convinto, dopo aver inutilmente ucciso il colonnello per impadronirsi di una sua preziosa agenda, che questa si trovi nelle mani di Hannay, l'agente prussiano Edmund Appleton, cioè l'insospettabile uomo d'affari inglese cui spetta eseguire l'attentato contro Karolides, incomincia una spietata caccia a Hannay.
